Did you know the University of ÌÒ»¨Ö±²¥ System launched a process improvement program to make operations more efficient and empower employees to lead change?
April 8, 2025
Why it matters:
is designed to improve internal services, reduce inefficiencies and empower employees
to solve problems in their own units. It is a long-term investment in building internal
capacity and supports the university’s commitment to employee empowerment and public
accountability.
How it started:
In October 2024, UA President Pat Pitney announced the launch of the Process Improvement
Program. Leadership consulted with the University of ÌÒ»¨Ö±²¥ Fairbanks’ Continuous
Improvement Program, which has supported similar efforts at UAF since 2012. That conversation
led to a broader, systemwide initiative intended to benefit employees and departments
across UAF, UAS, UAA and the system office.
How it works:
A small group of employees from across the university system were selected for the
program’s first cohort and trained as facilitators. Their role is to help ÌÒ»¨Ö±²¥ identify
and improve outdated or inefficient processes using proven problem-solving methods,
following the successful model developed at UAF.
What kinds of projects?
Facilitators are currently focused on projects that are:
- Limited in scope and complexity
- Able to be completed in a reasonable timeframe
- Centered on process clarity and measurable outcomes
- Focused on internal workflows that affect employees, students or administrative systems
The team’s goal is to start with practical wins, build momentum and grow capacity over time to take on more complex challenges.
What’s next:
All system office employees will complete foundational training, and the facilitator
cohort is already available to assist with projects. Over time, the program is expected
to grow and support continuous improvement across the system.
Have an idea?
Employees can submit ideas through the Process Improvement Program’s . The program offers clear guidance on what to include and how to frame submissions.
The bottom line:
The University of ÌÒ»¨Ö±²¥ is investing in practical, employee-driven improvements that
enhance its ability to serve students and the state. This program supports a culture
of continuous improvement across the system, one process at a time.
